Harnessing — Putting the Harness on the Horse

Place the saddle on the horse's back just behind the withers so that the saddle is level. (A) shows the correct placement. (B) is too far forward. (C) is too far back. The saddle should not press on the horse's spine; it should either have a tree or be padded. Place the backstrap and breeching over the horse's hindquarters.
   
   
Buckle the girth just so it is fastened, not tight (D). Then place the crouper around the horse's tail (E). Make sure no hairs are trapped under the crouper. You can put the crouper on before the girth. Some croupers are a solid piece with no buckles. Then it would be easier to place the crouper before buckling the girth. If you choose to put the crouper on first be careful that the saddle doesn't slide off the horse's back onto the floor or ground.
