Putting To

The horse should be either tied (not by the bridle) securely or held by a competent person before you start putting to. The halter around his neck hooked to crossties holds this horse.
Always lift the shafts above the horse's back before bringing the cart up to him (A). If the shafts are low they could hit him and startle him.
Put both shafts in the tugs up to the tug stops (B) or to the first bend in the shafts. Note the tug stop (C, green) and the footman's loop (D, red) in the picture above.
The next step is to attach the traces to the singletree of the cart. The horse is most likely to step forward and if the traces are fastened the cart will go with him the not scare him.
Run the trace along the inside of the shaft and through any loops on the shaft (E).
Hook the trace to the singletree by putting the buttonhole over the top of larger part of the singletree hook and then over the smaller end (F). You can secure the extra end of the trace with black tape or a Velcro strap for a neater appearance. |
