The last set of straps to attach is the overgirth or tiedown.  The overgirth holds the shafts down.  If you step into the cart from the rear as in a Meadowbrook or if the horse should rear, the shafts can go up suddenly if the overgirth isn't fastened.

This harness has an open tug with the overgirth strap (L) attached to the bottom.  The overgirth runs over the girth, thorough a leather loop and is buckled to the tug via the overgirth strap on both sides (M).

The overgirth should not be any tighter than the girth itself.  If it is tighter the two girths will work against each other and pinch the horse.

If you are using a check you would hook it now.  Grab the reins by the middle buckle and pull.  They should come free in your hand.  Hold them like you are driving; steady your horse with a word or two and step into the cart.  You are ready to drive!
